Sahale Glacier CAMP, Washington
Sahale Glacier Camp holds a special place in my heart. I first hiked this trail as a day hike for my 21st birthday. After years of us entering the permit lottery, our group finally scored, making the experience even more meaningful. It’s a true backpacking bucket list hike.
Sheer drop offs draped below our final scramble up rock and dust — nerve wracking almost to the point of delusional excitement. I thought the overlapping and cascading mountain scenery couldn’t get any better until we finished the last portion of the arm towards the top. s we crested the last of the talus, we laid our bleary eyes on the innumerable layers of the Cascade Range spanning across every direction.
Our campsite was perched on what felt like a rocky bird’s nest — positioned high above Doubtful Lake and directly on edge of Sahale Glacier. Unexpected snow forced us 4 girls into a single tent but once the loopy laughter gave out and the post-hike amnesia set in (Conclusion: we would do this all over again), we melted into a surprisingly cozy sleep.
The sun poured onto the peaks in front of us and we watched a pair of mountain goats traipse around illuminated by its fiery glow. Jess and Hayley served up some freshly-boiled snow to hydrate our breakfast. Em took a portrait of us from so high up that you might mistake it for being shot by a drone.
